AVID Media Composer to Adobe After Effects

Cameras

With a wealth of non linear editors available to use it is great to have numerous choices to cut your next project. AVID, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and yes even FCPX are some of the tools available to you the editor. But what if you have a project in AVID and you need to send it After Effects for some compositing? Also, you want to keep the project and sequence settings locked from your AVID project to After Effects. Now there is a stand alone software plugin that can do this for you. Such as Pro Import AE 5.0 from Automatic Duck. This program will allow you to move all the assets, sequences, and clip settings from FCP 7 or AVID to After Effects. The drawback of this is that it will set you back $495. My friend Alex Walker and I were talking about how we could do it without the software and he surprised me with his tutorial from AVID to After Effects. Please feel free to comment on tips to improve this workflow as it is in it’s infancy. Cheers!

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

well nice one ….but try to relink by hand a 30 -45 min project … with 100+ clips … or even a 5min edit 😉 just saying

That’s what assistant editors are for!

I think that relinking the media gets a lot easier once you’re in AE. There you only need to link a single file in a directory and AE will automatically relink all other missing media to files present in that directory.
You still have to relink a file in each directory- meaning that if your media files are spread across multiple directories it’s a bit of a hassle, but still- much much easier than linking each individual file.

My biggest question is using EDL versus using AAF files.
