Canon Rumors New C100 & C500 Canon Cinema Camera At NAB 2012. *UPDATE*

Cameras

Canon Rumors is reporting two new possible cinema cameras from Canon to be announced at NAB 2012. I have heard rumblings here in Hollywood about two possible cameras from Canon at NAB 2012. One camera in the $35K range (possibly the 4K number mentioned in the CR post?)

The other hitting Sony hard at around $8K with possible 4K intentions? This may be the  Cine DSLR camera that has been shown alongside the popular C300. It looks like we may have a race after all. My money is on Sony right now. However, that could easily change.

***Update Number 1***

I got a tip from a reputable source that the possible new Canon C100 will have a Canon EF only mount with HDMI output. No HD/SDI. This makes sense. I would also expect a smaller LCD than the $15K big brother Canon C300. I just hope the C100 will have 60P at full HD 1920 X 1080 resolution or it will simply not compete with the new Sony FS700.

***Update Number 2***

From EOSHD
“Canon are due to issue a press release ahead of NAB. What my source says about the new cameras is pretty extraordinary even in light of what Sony are doing with the FS700.

Canon will release a C500 for $25,000.

This is designed to be an Epic killer.

It is 4K at 120fps with EOS RAW via 3G HD-SDI. Officially certified raw recording deck solutions are being provided by Blackmagic and AJA.

At 60 fps EOS RAW from the C500 is 12 bit. This drops to a still impressive 10 bit at 120p.

The C500 also pumps out 1080p, 2K and Quad HD.

And now for the 4K DSLR…

Costing $10k. This is full frame and does ALL-I, IPB and MJPEG 4K.

Both the C500 and 4K EOS DSLR have log profiles.

Another feature is that it has a Super 35mm crop mode (like the D800 with DX crop mode) for compatibility with cinema lenses.

There’s also going to be 2 new zooms. Lightweight 2kg PL and EF mount cinema lenses. The first is a 15.5-47mm T2.2 and the second a 30-105mm T2.2. These are pricey cinema lenses at the $15,000 mark.

More news to follow.”

Expect this to go official on Thursday afternoon GMT and in the morning in the US.

***Update Number 3*** First Photos Of Canon C500 leaked.

Got this tip today. Not 100% but it comes from a good source. Stay tuned for more!

Not getting a great feeling. I have pulled the photos pending conformation. I apologize. But sometimes this happens in this game. I will try and sort this out.

Thanks for understanding.

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

With 4K cameras being well over $5,000 I highly doubt there will be an affordable, less than $8,000 4K camera available soon.

Yeah, but the problem with that JVC is the 4 streams idea. There’s so much that could go wrong with recording to 4 SD cards. Seems like bad mojo.

Canon talked with us about the HDSDI at SXSW ran into the same old cost issue we did, so it’s not a surprise the c100 wouldn’t have it. Now that 4K is becoming easier, getting this up to speed should really be a priority…

I wouldn’t touch it. But it does record 4K for under $5K.
