Cine Gear 2012. It’s All About Lighting.

Cameras

This year we felt that cameras have been covered and lighting has been lacking. So we decided to focus primarly on some of the new lights introduced at Cine Gear 2012. There were a few notable plasma lights from Hive Lighting and Photon Beard. They are very similar systems. The new Kobold Para lights from Bron Imaginig look killer! They have gained dramatically in popularity recently. They have a very nice feel and throw. I expect to see these pop up all over the place. HMI’s are also coming down in price thanks to Photon Beard. The new 1200W HMI is fairly reasonable at around $4K compared to Arri M18 at around $8K with ballast. After having LED’s shoved down our throat for the past two years, it’s nice to look at other options. LED’s are great for portability and size but I am getting tired of direct lighting altogether. Indirect lighting is the way to go if you have the time and space. Chimera have new soft boxes designed for smaller LED’s that are a bit pricey but very functional. I suspect to see knockoffs very soon. There were no major announcements this year but Cine Gear 2012 is always on our hit list. We are too close to not walk over to Paramount for the day. A HUGE Thanks to Greg Cruser and Chris Collins for hooking up the shoot!

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
