How To Clean Your Lenses: Wide Open Camera Style.

***Note: The Audio Is A Bit Messed Up. It Was Frankie Knuckles First Time And I Think I scared Him.

Here is a Quick Take on how to clean your camera lenses the correct way. I shot this in reaction to this video posted here on Light Stalking. There are so many things wrong with that video, I can’t even to begin to waste your time here. This is how we do it in Hollywood. I prefer canned air to the puff balls. I also recommend disposable kimwipes. There is less risk of adding dirt or dust with a fresh one every time. I also recommend using Pancro or any other cleaner that will not degrade the anti-reflective coating on the lens. Rosco is a cheaper alternative. The kicker here is that the cleaning fluid goes on the lens cloth, not the front element. A very light touch is all that is necessary. I prefer using a circular motion. A second hit with the air and off you go. It is not necessary to over clean the front element. The anti reflective coating will degrade on it’s own over time. Anything you can do to prevent that degradation will add value to the most important part of your kit. The lenses.

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Great video Jared thanks for sharing. Will definitely try this technique out but I had one question. Isn’t it bad to wipe in a circular motion? I could be wrong but I thought you are supposed to wipe from center to side. Can’t remember exactly why but I remember watching a video a while back.

    Thanks Again for posting

Small circles are best, you really only want to wipe the specific areas that may have oil or smudges. A light touch also helps save the coating.
    Thanks,
    Jared

I’ve been using lenspen for years and is very good,

Lens pens are great. I have always used disposable kim wipes. it’s just what I know.
    Thanks,

Are you nuts? Kimwipes? These contain glass fibres and will damage lens surfaces. Do not use them ever accept for your nose. If you need paper use special lens paper like ross optical lens tissues or other. Lenspens with mircofiber attachments are the preferred method today. Please correct this asap before people damage their lenses. Look at your lenses closely.

I respectively disagree. As long as the Kim Wipe is moist it will not harm the coating or the glass.
    Thanks,
    Jared
