iPhone 5S gets it’s first slow-motion samples

The iPhone 5S getting 720p120 was one of the more intriguing features of the new phone. I still haven’t gotten mine, but samples of the slow-motion are popping up. BLASTmediaPR on youtube made the quintessential slow-motion sampler.

I’m really happy with how it looks, for a camera phone, it’s got nice dynamic range and saturation, and I think Youtube hates me because 480p and 720p appear identical, I am hoping that’s not the actual resolution but an issue some where along the way. The larger sensor is a nice step in the direction of getting even more useable video out of the camera you always have on you. Now if they would let you control shutter and ISO independently, we’d have a quasi-useable b-cam for interviews at least!

Apple wasn’t the only smartphone manufacturer to pack more video goodies into their phone. Acer recently released a 4K-capable smartphone, the Liquid S2. Samples of that haven’t trickled out yet but I’d be curious if it’s useable for anything other than nice down-scaling to 1080p when coming off a tiny sensor.

Update: I’m less satisfied with the resolution on the 720p120 on the iPhone 5S, multiple sources all seem to be heavily compressed to the point where it’s resolving closer to 480p than 720p. Here is another sample of breakdancers, it’s interesting that anyone can shoot this kind of stuff now. Upside is you can easily fit a lot of 720p120 on your phone, now if you could just chose to do higher bitrate to preserve more image quality.
