Sony Announces New Camera Sensors With HDR Movie Function. Video Demo.

Cameras

Sony has announced two new CMOS image sensors that have HDR video capability. This would be a huge advance for Sony cameras. An HDR feature would be a great option to have for situations like the one above. There was not too much info in the press release, however the video speaks volumes. I expect to see more about this at NAB 2012.
I picked this up from @SonyAlphaRumors on Twitter.

Here is the boring press release from Sony.

“Tokyo, Japan – January 23, 2012 – Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced the development of two CMOS image sensor models designed for use in smartphones and other devices. They are equipped with Sony’s unique “RGBW Coding” function which allows images to be captured with low noise and high picture quality even in low-light conditions. They also contain Sony’s “HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie” function which allows brilliant color to be captured even in bright settings. Sony has also developed a model with built-in signal processing functionality, an element that usually requires external embedment.”

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Phones with HDR video?  Sounds like our phones will be more capable than our cameras. The video sample didn’t blow me away though. The examples of HDR video Ive seen using a beam splitter are much more powerful….Curious does anyone know if they used HDR video on the open of the TV Series Swamp People?

I was thinking they might have done that in post-processing. For instance, Dynamic Photo HDR 5 (one of my favorite HDR tools) now has the ability to HDR process video. Pretty cool look for sure.
