Sony Nex 5N ECM-SST1 Stereo Mic Test.

Cameras

Here is a little quick audio test we did with Hazel Estrella, one of our models for our Sony Nex 5N test shoot. The built in camera mic is really bad. The Sony ECM-SST1 seemed like it might be a little better. There are no other options for on camera sound. Stupid Sony Mount. It’s not the greatest mic but will work in a pinch. I picked mine up at B&H for around $90, much less than the $129 from the Sony Store. Hazel Estrella is an up and coming pop star. She has really great energy. I guess I would recommend getting this mic. It’s better than nothing. However this camera will work best with a separate sound system like the Zoom H4n.

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Thanks for exploring the potential of the 5N, Jared.  Love the price and the images.  Hate the crippled in-camera audio and lack of a flip-out hinge on the LCD for self-portraits.  Hanging on to the old GH2 until I see what the VG20 can do.

    Cheers,

how far away way she for the mic?

Hazel is about 5ft away from camera. Our studio is not the best place for sound. A bit hollow to begin with. Anything is better than the built in mic. Thanks for checking us out Philip!

Pfff, what kind of test is this… with words, you only get a certain idea off one specifiek range of Hz’s but not an overall result of what the mic is capable off… Cinematoghrapher or not… This test is not worth mentioning. Besides what was the distance from her to the mic? She sounds very left of the camera while she is centered? … pff…
