The Difference Between T-Stop and F-Stop

Cameras

By Chris Collins

There has been some talk about the speed of the new Zeiss CP.2 lenses.  The ZE and ZF lenses are faster than the T2.1 CP.2 set.  Jared and I got a chance to speak with Richard Schleuning, the US sales manager of Zeiss, and he explained the reasons for the difference in speed.

Zeiss limited the speed of the 50mm and the 85mm to maintain image quality across the board.  The ZE/ZF lenses are also marked by f-stop while the CP.2 cinema lenses are marked by t-stop.  There is some confusion as to the difference of f-stop and t-stop, so we asked Richard to explain.

Check back soon for the extended cut of our interview with Richard!

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
