what about “snare drum cuts” badadadadadadada— 1. close your eyes, 2. click the blade as many times as you can on your clip during a snare drum break, 3. delete every other resulting clip within your initial clip…. voila!!!

Well, the reason I left it out is because it’s really a motion graphics trick and not an editing one, but yes. Blame Video Copilot and JJ and Chris Nolan and innumerable hiphop videos. Easy bling. Great when done well though.

You forgot unmotivated anamorphic flares, reflecting off of black top for some reason? Also using anamorphic flares on 16×9 footage. Don’t get me wrong, I like using a little bit of anamorphic flares, when the final video is actually 2.35:1. But the way I see it used most of the time is just nauseating.

Yeah, good point Michael, just having a bit o fun with that post. Editors need a box of tricks, just one of those things. I actually don’t mind it on MTV, it’s corporate snorefests that I get asked to jazz up. I’ve done promo cuts for people like project mag where the footage was pretty good but th edit ricks really brought it to life and that’s all valid too. Sometimes we have to be butchers and not surgeons

just a thought: shouldn’t we rather discuss the stupid content than the edit techniques? … well ok there can be an overuse of certain “effects”. but in the end, what is wrong with some of these edit-tricks if the content is right and it helps to translate the “mood” of an trailer, music-video, clip …and so on?! … just saying! 😉
