Canon To Announce New Camera In Hollywood November 3rd, 2011. *Update*

Cameras

If this has anything to do with the rumor I picked up last week about a possible new Super 35 4K camera from Canon then we are all in for one killer ride. Engadget is reporting a major announcement from Canon here in Hollywood. The event will take place November 3rd, 2011. Here is a rip from the Engadget post. Click here to check it out. Here are the possible specifications.

1. Canon Super 35 Sized CMOS Sensor. 2K and 4K Resolution with 10 or 12 Bit at 50Mbps.

2. 4K via 4 separate streams.

3. There will be two options Canon EF and PL Mount.

4. This is a Professional Video Camera not a DSLR.

5. Price point around $15K US.

Here is a link to the original rumor post.

*Update*

Some of the announcement emails specify Paramount Studios as the announcement location. I have yet to confirm this but feel like it is a solid piece of information. Luckily I am only a few blocks from there! Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

*Update #2*

Canon will announce TWO cameras this November 3rd, 2011 at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. A Canon EF mount version and a PL mount version.

*Update #3*

Carl Zeiss Lenses were used in the testing process of the new Super 35 camera. This seems a bit odd, but could very well be true.

*Update #4*

The body style will be similar to the 4K hairdryer that was shown at Canon Expo in New York last year. It sounds like the LCD will be on top of the camera and not the camera left side.

Jared Abrams is a cinematographer based in Hollywood, California. After many years as a professional camera assistant he switched over to still photography. About two years ago a new Canon camera changed the way the world sees both motion and still photography. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Canon could disturb some shit. This could be fun. Gonna check out refused now and see the reaction :)

    Refused=reduser. I hate spell check.

12bit 4K at 50 Mbps?  Are you shooting directly to Youtube?  The current 5D shoots 8 bit HD at 50 Mbps.  Alexa shoots HD at 262 Mbps, and the RED shoots 4K at 320 Mbps (and is only $2k more than this proposed price).  Unless Canon are either magical, impractical, or these stats are wrong, I can’t see how this could work…

If it’s similar to the JVC (which would be even cheaper), the Canon would have 4x 8-Bit 4:2:2 50Mbps MPEG-2.

Being used to 12-Bit RAW already for years with the RED ONE, what do you think the reaction at RedUser will be? RED woke up all the camera companies, but obviously not yet enough. They’re slowly catching up on resolution, but resolution AND RAW is the key. They are years behind, and still people are complaining that RED is always late. 4k demands immense power. High Long GOP compression is not only bad, it uses even more power.

The camera, like the upcoming JVC, will split the 4K signal to 4 different streams that are recorded at 50mbits/s each. So in the end, you get 200mbits/s once the streams are combined. As for the Red One, it’s a real pain in the ass to use. Very unreliable. If this new Canon exists, it will use Canon lenses, XLR audio inputs and, possibly, a Thunderbolt connector for output. And paying $2K less than a 4 year old camera ain’t that bad ! And don’t forget that for the base price, the Red is pretty naked: even the handles are optional…

Gonna be an interesting day with the scarlet announcement so conveniently scheduled for the same day. Could Canon be bring their hairdryer to a knife fight and end up getting ambushed by a bazooka (stolen from reduser forum)
